What we do at Bikes4Peace

Bikes4Peace holds bike repair clinics for kids at various locations around the city of Syracuse each summer from late May until early September. We hold one clinic every two weeks on a week night from 5:00 until 7:00. We chose Tuesday this year, but this varies by group consensus. This summer's locations were The Northeast Community Center, The Boy's and Girl's Club on East Fayette, the Brady Faith Center, and The Spanish Action League. We show up with tools, basic supplies, and repair parts. The goal is to teach kids problem solving skills, so we try to have them do most of the work. We also hold volunteer training sessions in May for those who don't know how to repair bikes or who want to learn more about working with kids. If you are a newbie to bike repair, don't worry. A lot of repairs are simple, such as repairing a flat tire. And there is always plenty to do just keeping the kids, tools, and other volunteers organized.

During the off season we usually get together at least a few times for dinner someplace to discuss how things went the previous summer, or to plan for the upcoming summer. We also sometimes show up at events such as Earth Day and the Westcott Community Street Fair, so keep an eye on the calendar.
